Set operations

Union

• definition: the union of sets A and B is the set of all elements that are elements either of set A or of set B (or both of them)
• the union is denoted by ∪

Intersection

• definition: the intersection of sets A and B is the set of all elements that are elements of A and also elements of B
• the intersection is denoted by ∩
• this is pronounced "A cap B" or "A intersection B"

Difference

• definition: the difference between two sets A and B is this sequence is the set of all elements that belong to A but not belong to B
• the difference is denoted by \
• this is pronounced A minus B

Symmetrical difference

• definition: the symmetrical difference of sets A and B is by definition the set (A\B)∪(B\A)
• by notation AΔB
• this is pronounced " A delta B"
